“Rest of Assured of Uninterrupted Cooking Gas Supply”, MNGL Assures its Customers Amidst LPG Supply Crisis
Amid growing concerns over the commercial LPG shortage and fears that even piped natural gas supplies might be affected, Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) has moved swiftly to reassure its domestic customers that PNG supply to households will remain 100 per cent uninterrupted. The company has launched a multi-channel communication campaign to calm nerves as images of long queues outside LPG agencies and shuttered restaurants create anxiety among Pune’s nearly 8 lakh domestic PNG users.
Rising Concern Among Domestic PNG Users
As the commercial LPG crisis deepened this week, forcing iconic eateries like Modern Cafe in Shivajinagar to shut down and restaurants across Pune to cut menus or switch to electric induction cooktops, domestic consumers connected to MNGL’s piped natural gas network began expressing worries.
Social media platforms saw a surge of queries from residents asking whether the global LNG transportation disruptions due to the West Asia conflict would eventually impact their kitchen gas supply. The sight of commercial establishments struggling for fuel triggered genuine concern: if restaurants with deep pockets cannot get gas, what about ordinary households?
“Global uncertainties may change many things, but reliable energy should never be one of them,” MNGL responded in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on March 11, striking an optimistic tone while addressing these fears head-on.
MNGL’s Reassurance Campaign
The company followed up with an official press release explicitly stating that as per the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on March 9, domestic PNG and CNG continue to remain the highest priority sectors for natural gas supply.
“MNGL assures that households continue to receive safe, convenient, eco-friendly and uninterrupted PNG for cooking, while CNG stations remain adequately supplied to support public and private transport,” the company stated in its release.
Sujit Ruiikar, Vice President (Marketing) at MNGL, reiterated that following the central government’s directive, domestic PNG supply will continue without interruption and there is no shortage of natural gas for household use.
Why Domestic PNG Is Protected
The reassurance is backed by a clear government mandate. Under the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, the government established a priority-based allocation framework to manage India’s gas pool amid global supply disruptions.
Priority Sector I, which includes domestic piped natural gas (PNG), compressed natural gas (CNG) for transport, and LPG production, will receive 100 per cent of their six-month average consumption. This means households connected to PNG are legally protected from any supply cuts.
In contrast, commercial and industrial consumers supplied through city gas distribution networks fall under Priority Sector IV, and their supply has been restricted to 80 per cent of average consumption. This explains why restaurants and other commercial establishments are facing shortages while homes remain unaffected.
MNGL’s Strong Infrastructure in Pune
The company has also highlighted its robust infrastructure to back its assurances. MNGL currently operates an extensive gas distribution network of nearly 8,000 inch-kilometres of pipelines and more than 125 CNG stations across Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation areas.
The company presently caters to around 8 lakh domestic PNG connections and provides fuel for more than 5.5 lakh CNG vehicles in the region, ensuring consistent supply to households and the transport sector.
“Choose Convenience, Safety and Reliability”
In its social media messaging, MNGL has been promoting PNG as the fuel of choice precisely because it is insulated from such crises. “Global uncertainties may change many things, but reliable energy should never be one of them. Choose convenience, safety and reliability with PNG,” the company posted, subtly encouraging more households to consider switching from LPG cylinders to piped connections.
Officials highlighted that PNG is considered one of the cleanest and safest cooking fuels. It is cost-effective, convenient and eliminates the need for LPG cylinders, thereby saving kitchen space.
National Context: Other Gas Utilities Follow Suit
MNGL’s reassurance campaign mirrors similar efforts by city gas distributors across India. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) in Mumbai also assured customers that domestic PNG demand is being met entirely through domestically produced gas, making it immune to global supply shocks.
“Domestic household PNG demand is met through 100% domestically produced gas, ensuring an uninterrupted supply,” MGL stated on X, addressing a Mumbai resident’s query about whether consumers should start rationing gas usage.
Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) kept its messaging light but direct, urging PNG users not to worry. “Global tensions may rise, but your kitchen shouldn’t pause,” the company posted on X, highlighting the no-booking, no-waiting advantage of piped gas connections.
What This Means for Pune Residents
For Pune’s nearly 8 lakh domestic PNG consumers, the message is clear: there is no need to panic or ration gas usage. The government’s priority allocation framework ensures that household cooking needs come first, even as commercial establishments face restrictions.
However, the crisis has inadvertently become a powerful marketing moment for PNG. As long queues form outside LPG agencies and commercial users struggle for cylinders, the convenience and reliability of piped gas, including uninterrupted supply, no booking hassles, and no cylinder storage, have become more apparent than ever.
