Pune, February 26, 2026: In a major crackdown on traffic violators, the Pune Traffic Police has announced a special recovery drive, warning vehicle owners to clear all outstanding e-challans within 30 days. Failure to settle these dues will result in the suspension of driving licenses and potential legal proceedings in court.
According to senior officials, the department is prepared to take stringent action against defaulters. If the fines remain unpaid after the 30-day grace period, the traffic police will forward formal proposals to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to suspend the concerned driver’s license. Additionally, cases may be filed before a competent court for further legal recourse.
19 Lakh Defaulters in the City Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police, revealed the scale of the issue, stating that approximately 19 lakh vehicle owners in Pune have unpaid compounding amounts.
“We request all vehicle owners to pay their dues within 30 days of receiving the notice. An SMS will be sent to owners detailing the violation type, date, and the specific fine amount,” Patil said. He also urged citizens to remain vigilant against cyber fraudsters during the payment process.
Notice Period and Official Communication The department has specified a strict window for sending these notices. Formal alerts will be sent via SMS from the official short code MHPECH-G only between February 26 and March 1, 2026. Authorities have cautioned that any messages received outside this period claiming to be from the traffic police should be treated as suspicious.
How to Pay Your Fines Safely To ensure a transparent recovery process and prevent citizens from falling prey to phishing scams, Deputy Commissioner of Police Himmat Jadhav emphasized using only authorized channels:
- Official Website: https://mahatrafficechallan.gov.in
- Mobile App: Pune Traffic Police (PTP) App
- Physical Centers: Nearest traffic division office via e-challan machines (QR code, Debit/Credit cards).

Cyber Security Advisory The police have issued a set of guidelines to protect citizens from digital fraud:
- The traffic police will never send an APK file via message.
- Never share your OTP with anyone.
- Avoid clicking on unofficial links; use only the government portal or official app.
“This campaign aims to encourage compliance with traffic rules and strengthen overall discipline in the city,” said DCP Jadhav. Pune residents are advised to check their vehicle status immediately to avoid the inconvenience of a suspended license.
