MMR Transformation: Deputy CM Eknath Shinde Directs Municipal Bodies to Fast-Track Pod Taxi Projects
MUMBAI – In a significant move to overhaul urban mobility across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed municipal corporations to prioritize the implementation of Pod Taxi services. The initiative aims to solve the persistent “last-mile connectivity” challenge for millions of commuters relying on the Metro and local trains.
During a high-level review meeting, DCM Shinde instructed civic bodies to draft comprehensive plans for these automated transit systems. The goal is to provide a seamless transition for passengers traveling from their homes to railway or Metro stations, and finally to their workplaces.
Tackling the Last-Mile Hurdle
Currently, commuters in MMR cities heavily depend on auto-rickshaws and buses to bridge the gap between transit hubs and their final destinations. This often leads to heavy footfall congestion, unpredictable wait times, and increased road traffic.
“We must provide an efficient public transport system that takes citizens directly to their destinations,” Shinde stated. “Pod taxis will act as a feeder service, reducing the burden of private vehicles on our roads and significantly increasing the ridership of the Metro network.”
Collaborative Execution
To ensure the technical and financial viability of the project, the Deputy CM advised municipal commissioners to collaborate closely with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The integration of Pod Taxis is expected to:
- Decongest arterial roads in satellite cities.
- Provide a sustainable, tech-driven alternative to traditional paratransit.
- Enhance the overall efficiency of the existing multi-modal transport grid.
The meeting saw the attendance of several high-ranking officials, including Additional Chief Secretary Asim Gupta, Principal Secretary Navin Sona, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, MMRDA Additional Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal, and Thane Collector Shrikrishna Panchal.
With the directive now issued, the focus shifts to the municipal corporations of Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, and Navi Mumbai to present feasible blueprints for this futuristic transport solution.
