Purandar Airport: Land Compensation Process Set To Begin From December 20, Construction Likely to Begin Early 2026
Pune, November 27, 2025: The long-awaited Purandar Airport project near Pune has moved a major step forward, with authorities preparing to start distributing compensation to landowners from 20 December. The update has renewed hope that the mega aviation project will finally pick up pace after years of delays.
Compensation Negotiations Reach Final Stage
Land acquisition talks for Purandar Airport are in the final phase. The Pune district collector has confirmed that the compensation process will begin after the necessary clearance from the State Election Commissioner.
Farmers have been offered Rs 1 crore per acre as per the state notification issued under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act, 2013. This package includes:
- Double compensation for all on-site assets such as houses, cattle sheds and wells
- Compensation for borewells, pipelines and fruit-bearing trees
- Allotment of 10 percent developed land to project-affected families
However, several farmer groups have demanded a higher payout. Many are seeking compensation between Rs 4 crore and Rs 7 crore per acre, stating that Rs 1 crore per acre does not match the current market value. Some communities also want village-wise meetings for more clarity on valuations and the process of allotting developed land.
District collector Jitendra Dudi has assured farmers that the administration will follow the legal framework and ensure fair compensation for every eligible family.
Funding And Acquisition Timeline
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) will provide about Rs 4,500 crore for land acquisition. Officials said the corporation is already onboarding credit institutions to fund the payouts.
MIDC will also start work on creating a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to handle the request for proposal (RFP) and request for quotation (RFQ) processes. This will help ensure that awarding the developer contract for Purandar Airport happens without delay.
The government aims to finish the land acquisition by February 2026. If this timeline holds, construction tenders for Purandar Airport could be floated in the first quarter of 2026.
Villages And Land Area Involved
The Purandar Airport project requires 1,285 hectares across seven villages:
- Ekhatpur
- Khanwadi
- Kumbharvalan
- Munjawadi
- Pargaon
- Udachiwadi
- Vanpuri
More than 95 percent of landowners have already given their consent. Land measurement surveys are complete, and discussions with farmer representatives from all seven villages have taken place. Officials have also received consent for an additional 240 hectares that fall outside the original project map.
Airport Specifications And Capacity
Purandar Airport is planned as a major greenfield international airport that will cater to Pune and the wider western and central Maharashtra region. Key features include:
- Two parallel runways, each 4,000 metres long and 60 metres wide
- Passenger handling capacity of 75 million per annum
These specifications put the airport among the largest upcoming aviation projects in India.
Next Steps
With approvals expected in the coming days and compensation distribution likely to begin by late December, the Purandar Airport project seems poised for real progress. If acquisition stays on track, construction activity could begin as early as mid-2026, bringing Pune closer to getting its long-needed international air connectivity.
