Bengaluru, September 02, 2025: Bengaluru is officially bidding farewell to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as it transitions to a new civic setup under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). From Tuesday, the city will be governed by five separate municipal corporations, replacing the single urban body that has managed Bengaluru since 2007.

The state government’s 45-day timeline to operationalise the new corporations has ended, and it is expected to issue key orders soon. These include appointments of corporation commissioners, technical staff, and the formation of a delimitation commission to redraw ward boundaries. While ward offices remain in place, major changes in zonal and divisional setups will affect staffing and organisational structure.

BBMP Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao said the transition is unlikely to disrupt existing services. “We do not see much disruption to the existing arrangements. As works for the current financial year are already approved, individual corporations will not present a new budget, but they can pass a supplementary budget,” he explained.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar confirmed that senior officers with administrative experience will head the five corporations. Technical and non-technical staff will be drawn from personnel familiar with local governance.

The move to split BBMP has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters believe the new corporations will bring governance closer to residents, with each body led by a commissioner and an elected council. Critics caution that these corporations may have limited funds for new projects, as most state grants will remain with the Greater Bengaluru Authority.

Key milestones in Bengaluru’s civic evolution include:

  • January 2007: BBMP notified
  • July 2024: GBG Bill 2024 introduced in Assembly
  • May 2025: Greater Bengaluru Authority officially came into force
  • July 2025: Proposal for five city corporations notified
  • September 2025: BBMP officially dissolved

The state government has committed, through a Supreme Court affidavit, to complete ward boundary redrawing by November 1 and notify ward reservations by the end of the month.
