IMD Announces Arrival of Monsoon: Southwest Monsoon Hits Kerala on May 24; Earliest in 16 Years

In a welcome development for millions awaiting the rains, the Southwest Monsoon has officially set in over Kerala today, May 24, 2025, marking its earliest arrival in over a decade. The normal onset date is June 1, but this year’s early onset comes eight days ahead of schedule.
This is the earliest monsoon onset over Kerala since 2009, when it had arrived on May 23. The early arrival could have significant implications for agriculture, water availability, and temperatures across southern and central India, potentially offering relief from the intense summer heat.

Depression Near South Konkan Coast Intensifies
Simultaneously, weather conditions in the Eastcentral Arabian Sea and adjoining south Konkan coast are being closely monitored. A depression formed in the region has been slowly moving eastwards at a speed of 6 kmph over the past three hours.

As of 08:30 AM IST today, the system was centered near latitude 17.20° N and longitude 73.20° E, approximately 30 km north-northwest of Ratnagiri and 70 km south of Dapoli.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression is expected to make landfall between Ratnagiri and Dapoli by noon today, continuing its eastward trajectory. Authorities and residents in coastal Maharashtra are advised to stay alert and follow weather updates.
Implications and Outlook
The early monsoon is likely to boost Kharif sowing activities, aid in replenishing water reservoirs, and bring much-needed relief from heatwaves, especially in peninsular India. However, the depression in the Arabian Sea also brings the potential for heavy rainfall and gusty winds in coastal Maharashtra.
As the monsoon progresses, further updates from IMD will provide clarity on rainfall distribution and intensity across the country.
