Pune to Get Massive Traffic Relief: Fadnavis, Gadkari to Break Ground on Three Major Elevated Corridors on July 18
Pune is set for a major infrastructure transformation. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, will officially perform the ground-breaking ceremony for three highly anticipated elevated corridor projects tomorrow, July 18, 2026.
The three mega-projects, which aim to significantly decongest key industrial and commuter routes, will be executed by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) on behalf of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
A Breakdown of the Three Mega Corridors
The upcoming developments will target three of Pune’s most congested arterial roads:
- Pune-Shirur Elevated Corridor: Spanning 53.4 kilometers, this six-lane elevated corridor will run over the heavily congested Nagar Road. Crucially, the structure has been planned with provisions to integrate a future metro line, ensuring long-term multi-modal transit capabilities.
- Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur Elevated Corridor: Stretching across 28.3 kilometers, this project will directly benefit Pune’s northern industrial belt. Alongside the new elevated structure, the project includes expanding the existing at-grade highway to four lanes from Talegaon to Chakan, and expanding the remaining 24.9-kilometer Chakan-to-Shikrapur stretch to six lanes at-grade.
- Hadapsar-Yavat Elevated Corridor: Aimed at easing bottleneck friction on the Pune-Solapur highway, this 31.5-kilometer project features a six-lane elevated corridor alongside the six-laning of the existing at-grade highway. Similar to the Shirur route, it also includes dedicated design provisions for a future metro expansion.
Nashik Phata-Khed Project Remains Delayed
While tomorrow’s ceremony marks a green light for the bulk of Pune’s major elevated highway pipeline, one critical project remains stuck in limbo. The proposed Nashik Phata-Khed Elevated Corridor is currently the only major elevated route still stuck in the tendering phase. Progress on this highway has stalled due to prolonged delays in acquiring the necessary land parcels.
With mobilization and initial site work expected to begin immediately following tomorrow’s ceremony, local commuters and logistical operators can finally look forward to significant relief from the region’s notorious traffic gridlocks.
