Highlights

  • The Maharashtra government authorized MSRDC to raise more than Rs 11,000 crore to acquire land from 83 villages for the purpose constructing the Pune Ring Road.
  • The contractor should be chosen by January, and work should start in April 2023, according to officials.
  • The work is expected to be finished by December 2025 and soon after the citizens would be able to use the Pune Ring Road.

Pune may soon see relief from its quickly growing traffic, as local state highway authorities aim to finish the much awaited Pune Ring Road project by December 2025.

By allowing vehicles from different regions of the state to traverse through the city without using its arterial highways, the 170 km long Pune ring road will aid in reducing traffic congestion.

It will be a six-lane express expressway (with potential for expansion) with a 120 kph vehicle speed restriction. Without factoring in the cost of purchasing the land, the anticipated building cost is around Rs 17,412 crore.

According to representatives of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the Pune ring road project will receive close to Rs 11,000 crore for the purchase of land from 83 villages.

The Maharashtra cabinet recently gave MSRDC permission to borrow more than Rs 35,000 crore to pay compensation for purchasing land for various projects. Pune Ring Road will receive Rs 11,000 crore of this total.

Officials anticipate that the financial allocation will hasten the project’s timely completion and land purchase procedure.

According to sources, the contractor will be chosen by January, and construction will start in April 2023.

Why Pune Needs a Ring Road

Pune district is the most populated district in Maharashtra, with 94 lakh residents as per the 2011 census. The city is located at the intersection of four important state and federal routes, through which a significant amount of daily outward traffic travels. In addition, traffic in and around Pune City has been rapidly growing as a result of the area’s rapid economic development.

The planned project will guarantee a constant flow of traffic, which will lower the level of noise and emissions.

Traffic that flows easily and moves quickly will produce less emissions, lowering pollution levels.

The creation of less expensive neighborhoods with homes and businesses is one of the indirect advantages since it allows people to take use of the transportation system’s increased speed and dependability.

Alignment of The Pune Ring Road

Eastern Alignment (Part-1), Eastern Alignment (Part-2), and Western Alignment are the three packages that make up the project.

Eastern Alignment (Part-1) is a 38.3 km long section that begins in Urse and ends in Solu. Eastern Alignment (Part-2) is a 66.5 km long route that begins in Solu and ends in Varve (Kelawade), close to the Satara highway.

The Western Alignment, which is 68.8 kilometers long, runs from Urse Village to Varve (Kelwade) via Parandwadi, Paud Road, Mula Road, and Mutha Road.
