Pune: PCMC Launches Advanced Effluent Treatment Plant to Tackle Indrayani River Pollution

PCMC Effluent Treatment Plant

In a significant move towards environmental conservation, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has inaugurated a cutting-edge Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at Kudalwadi. With the capacity to treat 3 million liters of wastewater daily, this facility is poised to make a substantial impact on reducing pollution in the Indrayani River. By preventing the flow of chemical and contaminated water into the river, the ETP stands as a testament to PCMC’s dedication to preserving natural resources and promoting sustainable living.

Commissioner Shekhar Singh articulated the municipality’s commitment to the river’s preservation, emphasizing the strategic role of effluent treatment plants in achieving this goal. “Our efforts are directed towards the well-being of both society and the environment,” Singh stated, highlighting the initiative to reuse treated water as part of PCMC’s broader environmental strategy.

Joint City Engineer (Environment) Sanjay Kulkarni also noted the plant’s critical role in mitigating river pollution, aligning with innovative pollution combat solutions proposed by the municipal leadership.

The project comes in response to concerns from the National River Conservation Directorate regarding high pollution levels in the Indrayani River, exacerbated by industrial discharge. Addressing these challenges, the PCMC has cleared encroachments and complied with directives from the National Green Tribunal and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to establish the ETP.

In addition to combating pollution, the PCMC is promoting the use of treated water among local businesses, residents, and construction professionals, offering it free of charge to encourage sustainable water use practices. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the community’s dependency on river water for non-drinking purposes, furthering the goal of environmental preservation.

This proactive effort by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship and the health of the Indrayani River, ensuring its protection for future generations.
