EV revolution in Pune

PUNE, May 23, 2023: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) is setting its sights on an electric future.

As the number of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to grow in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, MSEDCL has announced plans to establish more e-charging stations along all highways traversing these cities alongwith a new EV charging app. Continue reading to know more details.

On Monday, a new charging station at the Ganeshkhind sub-divisional office on Senapati Bapat Road was inaugurated, underscoring MSEDCL’s commitment to promoting EV usage. During the event, it was announced that Mahavitran, the state’s nodal agency for providing EV charging facilities, is gearing up to manage the rising demand for EV charging.

In order to streamline the process for charging station power connections, MSEDCL has established a dedicated web portal and mobile app. “We are focused on setting up advanced charging stations and simplifying the process for EV customers,” stated a representative. Plans for additional charging stations in the twin cities are also reportedly in progress.

The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has observed a significant uptick in EV registrations post Covid-19. For 2022-23, a total of 27,679 two-wheelers were registered, a substantial increase from the 8,668 in the previous year. The number of electric cars and auto-rickshaws has also seen an upward trajectory, with registrations totaling 1,825 and 42 respectively, a remarkable increase from 961 and 6 in 2021-22.

However, the rapidly growing number of EVs has highlighted the need for expanded charging infrastructure. With more than 46,000 EVs of all categories registered in Pune since 2021-22, demand for charging stations has skyrocketed. A local resident expressed, “More charging stations equals less waiting time for charging.”

Currently, there are 15 operational charging stations under MSEDCL Pune Circle’s jurisdiction. MSEDCL has also developed an app named ‘Power App’ for EV consumers, enabling them to locate the nearest charging station, self-charge their vehicles, and make payments, further easing the transition towards an electric future. This new app for EV charging is going to be rolled out soon in the near future.
