Pune: Katraj Zoo Implements Cooling Measures for Animals Amid Rising Temperatures

Katraj Zoo Summer Care

In response to the early onset of summer, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, located in the suburbs of Katraj, Pune, has introduced several innovative measures to ensure the well-being of its resident animals. According to officials, the zoo has equipped the enclosures of tigers, lions, leopards, and other animals with air coolers and high-pressure mist fogging machines to help them combat the scorching heat. This initiative is part of the zoo’s annual summer management efforts to prevent heat stroke among its carnivorous and feline inhabitants.

The cooling devices, carefully positioned inside the cages, are designed to offer maximum relief without obstructing public viewing. “The mist fogging machines and coolers are activated around noon every day, providing a much-needed respite from the heat for the animals,” a zoo official stated. In addition to these measures, elephants are allowed to cool off by taking dips in ponds or swimming pools available within their enclosures.

Another highlight of the zoo’s summer care program includes serving the bear family with ice cakes laced with honey and a mix of fruits, ensuring both nutrition and cooling effects. These initiatives underscore the zoo’s commitment to the health and comfort of its animals during the increasingly challenging summer months.

The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park’s proactive approach to animal care during the summer season is a testament to its dedication to wildlife conservation and the provision of a safe and comfortable environment for its residents. As the temperatures continue to rise, such measures are crucial for the well-being of the animals, ensuring they remain healthy and stress-free.
