Pune: Hinjawadi and Chakan Get Rs. 1826 Crore For Infrastructure Upgrade to Address Traffic Congestion

Pune, September 29, 2026: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has given in-principle approval to a ₹426 crore plan aimed at addressing traffic congestion in Hinjawadi. A separate ₹1,400 crore integrated infrastructure plan for Chakan has also received in-principle approval.

The plans were reviewed at a meeting chaired by Fadnavis at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai. Minister of State Madhuri Misal, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agarwal and senior officials were present. Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi presented the plans.

Work under the Chakan and Hinjawadi plans is scheduled to begin from December.

₹426 crore plan for Hinjawadi

The ₹426 crore plan has been prepared to address traffic congestion in Hinjawadi.

Six acres of land have been made available to address electricity supply issues in the area. The process is also underway to deploy 100 Maharashtra Security Force personnel for traffic and other management.

Waste collection in Hinjawadi will be started through either the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) or Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

An AI-based traffic enforcement system is also planned for Chakan, Talegaon and Hinjawadi. Traffic management and enforcement will be carried out in coordination with the traffic police through a command and control centre. CCTV and Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) projects have also been approved.

₹1,400 crore integrated plan for Chakan

The ₹1,400 crore Chakan plan covers roads, monsoon drainage, traffic management, pedestrian facilities, public transport, parking, water supply, electricity and solid waste management.

Fadnavis directed MIDC, PMRDA, the Public Works Department, Zilla Parishad and other agencies concerned to work jointly and coordinate funds and implementation for the proposed works.

The first phase will cover improvements to about 75 km of roads. A study has been conducted on the Chakan Industrial Area’s total 498-km road network, with roads selected based on traffic density, industrial importance, freight movement, road condition, waterlogging, safety and connectivity.

The selected roads will have separate pedestrian paths, rainwater drainage, traffic facilities and road safety measures. The work will use the available right-of-way and no land acquisition will be required in the first phase. Encroachments on roads are proposed to be removed, while separate space under roads for utility lines has also been proposed.

Pedestrian paths, safe road-crossing arrangements and traffic control measures will be provided on the selected roads. Pedestrian facilities have also been proposed as part of the national highway flyover work.

Drainage works targeted by June 2027

Around 78 km of natural drains in the Chakan industrial area have been affected by encroachments, obstructing the flow of rainwater. According to the information presented at the meeting, this has resulted in water entering industrial units, disruption to traffic and, on some occasions, companies having to stop operations.

Around 70% to 80% of the action to remove encroachments from the drains has been completed. The remaining obstacles will be removed in phases.

The plan includes clearing natural drains, providing drainage along both sides of roads, increasing the capacity of culverts and bridges and creating water storage arrangements where required. About 38 km of roadside stormwater drains are also planned.

The target is to clear the natural drains and complete the drainage arrangements by June 2027.

Around 500 additional buses proposed

The plan has estimated a requirement for around 500 additional buses on different routes connecting Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad with Chakan.

Six important junctions in the area are also proposed to be improved. The plan includes redesigning junctions, managing turns according to traffic flow and correcting unauthorised median openings on the national highway while providing U-turns at designated locations.

AI-based traffic signals, cameras, radar, vehicle number recognition systems and a central control room are planned at important junctions in Chakan.

For traffic management, 100 Maharashtra Security Force personnel are to be made available in the Chakan area from October 1.

Parking, water supply, power and waste management

MIDC has made parking facilities available at five locations in the Chakan industrial area for large vehicles.

The plan also proposes development and maintenance of road dividers with participation from private organisations. Industrial establishments along the roads are proposed to be involved in works including beautification, public toilets and bus stops.

The Chakan Industrial Area water supply scheme is planned for completion in 2027. A proposal has been made to hand over the scheme currently being implemented by the Chakan Industry Association to the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran.

MIDC has provided land for a 100 MVA power substation, with work planned to begin in December.

A centralised solid waste processing centre is also planned. Tenders have been prepared to process waste from 14 villages and two municipal councils. The system is proposed to be established through PMRDA and is targeted to become operational within eight to 10 months.
