Pune: Dr. Anupam Kashyapi Retires After Over Three Decades of Service at IMD Pune

The city bids farewell to a distinguished meteorologist, Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, who has recently retired from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune, after an illustrious career spanning 31 years and 8 months. Dr. Kashyapi, who last held the position of the head of the weather forecasting division, has been instrumental in modernizing weather forecasting and making significant contributions to agricultural meteorology and disaster mitigation.

Starting his journey in 1992 as a trainee meteorologist, Dr. Kashyapi’s career at IMD Pune was marked by his ascent through various critical roles. He notably served as the meteorologist in charge of the training unit and was the director of the Agrometeorological Field Unit (AMFU) Scientists’ course. His work has been pivotal in the field of agricultural meteorology research and operations.

Dr. Kashyapi’s tenure included a transfer to the Meteorological Centre in Gangtok, Sikkim, where his responsibilities covered weather forecasts and agricultural meteorology. His expertise also led him to serve as the director of Meteorological Centre Bhopal, where he was recognized for his exceptional handling of weather inputs during significant events.

Upon his return to Pune, he took the lead in the Weather Forecasting Division, driving forward the modernization of weather forecasting and introducing proactive measures for disaster mitigation. Under his leadership, Pune city expanded its forecast stations and embraced the multilingual dissemination of weather products. He was instrumental in introducing impact-based forecasts (IBF) for disaster mitigation and initiated the production of daily weather videos in Marathi, enhancing public accessibility to weather information.

Dr. Kashyapi’s legacy extends beyond operational contributions; he has been a vital force in research, capacity building, and fostering international collaborations. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to agricultural meteorology, operational weather forecasting, and research on climate change, he was honored as a Fellow of the India Climate Congress in December 2019.

As Dr. Anupam Kashyapi steps into retirement, his contributions to the field of meteorology and the community at large remain indelible, setting a high bar for future generations in meteorological science and public service.
