PMRDA to Build Six Priority Roads in Pune’s Hinjawadi IT Park to Ease Traffic Jams and Waterlogging
PUNE: Daily commuters and IT professionals heading to Pune’s Hinjawadi IT Hub can finally look forward to smoother travel, as the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) will build six new priority roads designed to ease traffic jams and prevent monsoon waterlogging across the Hinjawadi-Maan-Marunji industrial belt.
The ambitious infrastructure upgradation will construct and widen Development Plan (DP) and ring road connectors measuring between 18 and 36 meters in width. Coupled with comprehensive underground drainage network overhauls, the master plan aims to permanently eliminate the bottleneck points that have plagued Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park for over a decade.

The six priority road projects have been earmarked following extensive traffic flow analyses by urban planners and local authorities. By offering direct bypass options for techies moving between Hinjewadi Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3, Wakad, and Maan, these arteries will decentralize vehicular pressure from the overburdened main carriage routes.

- Surya Hospital to Thakar Vasti: 3.74 km
- Surya Hospital to Sakhare Vasti (Phase 1): 1.30 km
- Marunji to Shani Mandir: 3.50 km
- Nande to Maan: 1.80 km
- Thakar Vasti to Maan: 3.00 km
- Marunji to Shani Mandir (Wakad Link): 3.50 km

Speaking on the initiative, PMRDA Chief Engineer Shivprasad Bagdi confirmed that the authority has floated tenders to engage top technical consultants to draft the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
“Work to develop alternative roads to ease traffic congestion is being prioritised,” Bagdi stated. “The DPR preparation process will include road-widening, junction improvements, stormwater drainage, sewerage, water supply, electricity lines, street lighting, and utility ducts. Once completed, these roads will offer massive relief to commuters and residents alike.”
Dual Focus: Easing Traffic Snarls and Eliminating Monsoon Flooding
Integrated Utility Ducts and Stormwater Drainage Networks
One of the most frequent complaints from software professionals and local residents in the Hinjewadi-Maan-Marunji cluster is monsoon waterlogging. Sudden downpours routinely submerged internal connectivity roads, bringing traffic to a total standstill for hours and forcing tech firms to shift to work-from-home modes.
To solve this permanently, PMRDA’s road project integrates civil drainage engineering directly into the pavement designs:
- High-Capacity Stormwater Channels: Dedicated side drains and culverts designed using local hydraulic studies to handle peak rainfall run-offs.
- Rigid Pavement Technology: Strategic deployment of high-durability cement-concrete (rigid) pavements in areas susceptible to water accumulation.
- Underground Utility Ducts: Dedicated channels for fiber optics, power lines, and water pipelines to end continuous, destructive road digging by telecom and power utility agencies.
Major Junction Redesigns & Pedestrian Infrastructure
Besides new road construction, the scope of work includes geometrical re-engineering of critical traffic junctions across Wakad, Maan, and Hinjewadi. High-density footpaths, clear kerbs, median gaps, and modern LED street lighting will be installed to guarantee pedestrian safety alongside smooth vehicle movement.
