PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram announced the development, thanking Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, for their support. He also thanked Pune’s defence officers for their proactive assistance in handing over the land.

The road connects Koregaon Park to Hadapsar Railway Station and is an important route for daily commuters and businesses in the area. The widening is expected to ease traffic congestion and provide relief to motorists while benefiting commercial establishments along the stretch.

The PMC has been pursuing the widening of North Main Road as part of its efforts to address traffic congestion on key roads across Pune. The civic body had earlier initiated the process to widen the road from 18 metres to 30 metres between Westin Hotel Chowk and Tadigutta Chowk.

The proposed widening covers a stretch of approximately 1.65 km. However, acquiring land along parts of the road had posed challenges, with some landowners reportedly seeking compensation for earlier road widening work carried out between 2003 and 2005.

With possession of the defence land secured, the PMC has taken a step towards completing the widening project, which the commissioner said would be carried out before the next monsoon.
