Born on September 7, 1963, in Chandigarh, Neerja was the daughter of journalist Harish Bhanot and Rama Bhanot. Affectionately called Lado by her family, she studied in Chandigarh and Mumbai before entering the modelling profession.

She later joined Pan American World Airways on January 16, 1986, where she earned recognition for her dedication and composure.

Pan Am Flight 73 was travelling from Mumbai to Frankfurt and New York, with a scheduled stop at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan. On the morning of September 5, four armed hijackers stormed the aircraft.

Neerja was among the first to spot the attackers and alert the cockpit crew. Her warning enabled the pilots and flight engineer to escape, preventing the hijackers from taking control of the aircraft and forcing it into the air.

With the cockpit crew gone, Neerja took charge of the cabin. During the long standoff, the hijackers demanded passengers’ passports to identify Americans, whom they intended to target. Neerja and other crew members secretly hid many American passports under seats and discarded others, making it harder for the hijackers to identify their intended victims.

Throughout the ordeal, she helped keep passengers calm and provided food, water and reassurance. She also helped protect children during the terrifying hours aboard the aircraft.

After nearly 17 hours, the aircraft’s power failed and the cabin plunged into darkness. The hijackers opened fire, triggering chaos as passengers tried to escape. Neerja opened an emergency exit and helped people evacuate through the escape chutes.

Although she had an opportunity to escape herself, she stayed behind to help others, particularly children travelling alone. She was shot while protecting passengers and died in the line of duty, just two days before her 23rd birthday.

Her courage helped save numerous lives. One of the children she helped, who was seven years old at the time, later became an airline captain and credited Neerja’s sacrifice with inspiring his career.

In 1987, Neerja was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award. She became its youngest recipient and the first woman to receive the honour.

Her legacy continues through the Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust, established by her family to honour acts of bravery and support women facing injustice. Her life was also portrayed in the 2016 Hindi film Neerja, starring Sonam Kapoor.
