The construction of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, a much-anticipated infrastructure project, has reached a significant milestone with 63% of the work now completed. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) recently shared images showcasing the latest advancements in the project, signaling a promising move towards its completion.

About Navi Mumbai International Airport

Officially named D. B. Patil International Airport, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to redefine the aviation landscape in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Situated in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, within the Raigad district of Maharashtra, this international airport aims to operate alongside the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, enhancing the region’s air travel capacity significantly.

A Greenfield Project

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is a greenfield project spearheaded by CIDCO in collaboration with several leading firms and consultants. The project is executed in three phases, with the initial phase set to accommodate 25 million passengers annually. Upon the completion of all phases by 2032, the airport will boast a capacity to handle over 90 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo each year.

Infrastructure and Connectivity

L&T Infrastructure Engineering Limited takes the lead as the detailed design consultant for this ambitious project. The airport’s passenger terminals and the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower have been crafted by the renowned London-based Zaha Hadid Architects, ensuring a blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The project, valued at approximately ₹16,700 crore, is a partnership between Adani Airports Holdings Limited and CIDCO, highlighting a model of public-private collaboration. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with construction kickstarting in August 2021 after a comprehensive land acquisition phase.

Future Prospects

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is strategically positioned to enhance connectivity, with plans to link it with Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 and the proposed Mumbai Metro Line 8. Furthermore, it is expected to serve as the terminal station for the anticipated Mumbai-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail corridor, promising seamless travel options for passengers.
