Cyclone in Bay of Bengal

November 13, 2023: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Global Forecast System (GFS) models have indicated the formation of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal by November 15. This emerging weather system is expected to significantly impact the eastern coast of India, particularly North Odisha and West Bengal.

Probable Impact on the ICC World Cup 2023

One of the major concerns arising from this situation is its potential effect on the ICC World Cup 2023. The semi-final match, scheduled for November 16 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where South Africa is set to take on Australia, might face severe disruptions. Vineet Kumar, a renowned weather scientist specializing in ocean-cyclone interaction and global cyclone activity changes, suggests a possible complete washout of the match due to the cyclone.

IMD Pune’s Forecast and Precautions

K.S. Hosalikar, the Head of IMD Pune, has also issued a statement confirming the likely formation of a Low Pressure Area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal on November 14. The system is expected to move west-northwest and intensify into a depression over the central and adjacent southern Bay of Bengal around November 16.

  • Fishermen Alerts: The IMD has advised fishermen against venturing into the sea during this period.
  • Heavy Rainfall Alerts: Residents in the affected areas are warned to prepare for significant rainfall and potential flooding.
