‘No Added Sugar’ Is Not Enough; FSSAI Asks Consumers to Watch for Maltodextrin Also on Food Labels

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has cautioned consumers not to get misled just by ‘No Added Sugar’ Label on food products.
There could be Maltodextrin – an ingredient that has a high glycemic impact and can raise blood glucose quickly. However, FSSAI said its significance depends on the quantity consumed, how frequently it is consumed and the overall food being eaten.
In a consumer awareness post, FSSAI said maltodextrin is a carbohydrate ingredient made by breaking down starches from sources such as corn, rice, potato and tapioca.
Consumers watching their sugar or calorie intake should therefore check the ingredient list for maltodextrin, according to the information shared by FSSAI.
The larger message from the regulator is to read beyond one ingredient or a single claim on the pack. FSSAI’s campaign describes the ingredient list as “part of the story” and asks consumers to consider the food as a whole.
