Pune, June 21, 2026: After almost 12-14 days of delay, some weather activity is on the cards from June 23 when light rain and thunderstorms may break the dry spell and make conditions favorable for the advancement of monsoon into the city.

Though meteorologists are still reluctant to forecast the exact arrival date of the monsoon in the city, the Regional Meteorological Department, Mumbai (RMC) has predicted light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning from June 23rd.

In technical terms, most experts are discussing three factors, besides El Nino, for the delayed monsoon and subdued weather activity in Maharashtra.

1. Absence of Somali Jet: This is a powerful, low-level wind circulation over the Arabian sea that pushes moisture laden winds over the Indian west coast. Right now this weather phenomenon is very weak and is expected to strengthen in the coming days.

2. No Low Pressure Zone in Bay of Bengal: When low pressure zone forms in the Bay of Bengal, it sucks in air from the Arabian sea towards the Indian subcontinent. There has not been any occurrence of such a low-pressure zone in the Bay of Bengal till now this monsoon season.

3. Continuous Dry Air Intrusion: Dry air is circulating over Maharashtra that is pushing away the moisture from the west coast, thus disrupting the onset of monsoon.

Whatever be the cause, the delayed monsoon is causing a lot of concern for the people of India as water stocks are dwindling and the summer heat is impacting daily life.

However, all the above are speculations shared by various sources online and IMD is the only official weather forecasting agency and unless they present a date for the onset of monsoon in Pune and the rest of Maharashtra, nothing can be said with authority.

Till then, we can only wait and watch.
