46.9°C Recorded in Maharashtra: IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts for 7 Districts on April 27
Maharashtra is grappling with a punishing surge in temperatures as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for several districts, warning of severe heatwave conditions. The mercury has already reached dangerous levels, with Akola recording the state’s highest temperature at a blistering 46.9°C.
While the Vidarbha region swelters under extreme heat, Pune recorded the state’s lowest minimum temperature at 21.5°C, offering a brief respite before the daytime heat sets in.
Extreme Temperatures Across the State
The latest data from the IMD reveals a state divided by extreme weather. In Vidarbha, temperatures have consistently crossed the 45°C mark:
- Amravati: 46.8°C
- Wardha: 46.4°C
- Yavatmal: 46.0°C
- Nagpur: 45.4°C
In Central Maharashtra, the heat remains intense with Jalgaon reaching 43.2°C and Solapur hitting 43.0°C. Meanwhile, the Marathwada region saw Nanded peak at 43.5°C.
Weather Warnings: Heatwaves and Thunderstorms
The IMD has placed several districts under Yellow Alert, indicating a dual threat of heatwaves and sudden unseasonal weather. While many regions will remain dry, Pune’s forecast for tomorrow suggests a mainly clear sky that may turn partly cloudy by the afternoon or evening, with a possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and very light rain.
In the Konkan and Goa region, humidity remains a concern. Mumbai and Ratnagiri recorded maximums of 34.4°C and 34.0°C respectively, which, coupled with high humidity, significantly increases the discomfort index.
Detailed Weather Warnings by District
The IMD has categorized the state into different alert levels based on the severity of the expected heat and local weather conditions for April 27, 2026:
- Orange Alert (Severe Heatwave): Akola, Amravati, and Wardha.
- Yellow Alert (Heatwave Conditions): Nagpur, Buldhana, Chandrapur, and Bhandara.
- Yellow Alert (Hot and Humid Conditions): Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri.
- Thunderstorm Warnings: While under heat stress, districts like Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Latur, Nanded, and Beed may also witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate rainfall.
Safety Advisory
Health authorities and the IMD have issued a stern advisory for residents to mitigate the risk of heatstroke and dehydration:
- Stay Indoors: Avoid stepping out between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, when the sun is at its peak.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water and fluids even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Protective Gear: If travel is necessary, use umbrellas, hats, and light-colored cotton clothing.
With no significant rainfall expected until late April 28 for most regions, the heatwave is expected to persist, making the next 48 hours critical for public safety.
