‘James Bond’ in Jubilee Hills: Hyderabad Doctor Caught Using Remote-Controlled Flip Number Plates to Dodge Challans
HYDERABAD – In a scene straight out of a Hollywood spy thriller, Hyderabad traffic police have uncovered a sophisticated, high-tech mechanism used by a luxury car owner to evade digital surveillance and traffic penalties. A 30-year-old doctor was apprehended in the upscale Jubilee Hills area after his BMW was found fitted with a remote-controlled system designed to swap number plates instantly.
The Midnight Bust at Jubilee Hills
The incident unfolded late Friday night near the Chiranjeevi Blood Bank on Road No. 1, Jubilee Hills. During a routine drive against drunk driving, officers flagged down a luxury BMW. The driver, identified as Dr. Gautham Reddy, was found to be heavily intoxicated. A breathalyzer test revealed a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 137 mg/100 ml, significantly higher than the permissible limit of 30 mg/100 ml.
Accidental Discovery of the ‘Flip’ Tech
While the driver was initially booked for driving under the influence, the true extent of his “high-tech” deception was discovered by accident at the police station.
According to Traffic Inspector N. Ravinder, a constable searching for the boot release inadvertently pressed a button located near the driver’s seat. To the officers’ shock, the Telangana registration plate (TS 09 FQ 9999) flipped down to reveal a Delhi registration (DL 6C M 7097).
How the Number Plate Swapping System Works
The vehicle was equipped with an Electric License Plate Flipper (ELPF), a gadget famously associated with James Bond’s Aston Martin.
- Remote Operated: The system is triggered by a button inside the cabin or a handheld remote.
- Dual Identity: It allows the driver to switch between two different plates in less than three seconds.
- Motive: Investigators believe the system was used to dodge e-challans and evade the high road tax required when transferring a vehicle from Delhi to Telangana.

Criminal Charges and Crackdown
The Hyderabad police have registered a case against Dr. Reddy under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating and impersonation, alongside various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
“While we have seen fake plates before, this level of electronic manipulation is a first for us,” stated a senior official. “We are now tracking the car decor shop in Madhapur that allegedly installed this illegal device.”
The police have seized the BMW and are conducting a forensic audit of the vehicle’s history to check for pending challans under both registration numbers.
