PUNE: In a chilling incident that has sparked fresh concerns over fire safety in educational zones, a gas cylinder exploded at a popular preschool located in the IV Estate area of Wagholi on Sunday, April 5, 2026. The blast, which occurred during the evening hours, caused significant damage to the building’s infrastructure, but authorities have confirmed that no casualties occurred.

Sunday Holiday Prevents Potential Catastrophe

The incident was reported at approximately 6:15 PM. Because the explosion took place on a Sunday, the school was completely empty of students and staff. Local residents reported hearing a deafening sound followed by a massive plume of smoke rising from the school premises.

Fire officials stated that had the blast occurred during school hours, the result could have been catastrophic given the intensity of the fire and the subsequent explosion.

Swift Response by Pune Fire Brigade

Upon receiving the alert, a fire tender from the Wagholi Fire Station was immediately dispatched to the scene. Firefighters arrived to find a raging blaze that had already engulfed a portion of the school.

The risk escalated when responders identified two LPG cylinders inside the fire zone. While one cylinder exploded due to the extreme heat, firefighters displayed immense bravery by cooling and removing the second cylinder before it could ignite, preventing a chain reaction of explosions.

Collaborative Firefighting Operation

Due to the intensity of the flames, additional support was requested. Two more fire tenders from the PMC Kharadi Fire Station joined the operation. The joint effort of the teams successfully brought the fire under control within an hour, followed by a cooling operation that lasted late into the night.

Massive Property Damage Reported

While the human cost was nil, the financial and material loss is substantial. According to preliminary assessments:

  • School furniture and workstations were reduced to ashes.
  • A large stock of textbooks and educational supplies was destroyed.
  • The structural integrity of the affected wing is currently under review by experts.

Safety Protocols Under the Scanner

The cause of the initial fire is still under investigation, with short-circuiting being a primary suspect. However, the presence of commercial-grade gas cylinders on the premises of a preschool has raised serious questions.

“We are investigating why the cylinders were stored in that specific area and whether the school met the necessary fire safety norms,” a senior fire official noted. This incident serves as a wake-up call for educational institutions across Pune to strictly adhere to the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act.
