AICTS Pune Achieves Rare Global Milestone in Cardiac Surgery
PUNE – In a remarkable display of surgical precision and clinical excellence, doctors at the Army Institute of Cardiothoracic Sciences (AICTS) in Pune have successfully treated four patients suffering from an ultra-rare cardiac complication. This achievement places the premier military institute at the forefront of global cardiac care, as only about 40 such cases have been documented worldwide.
The patients were diagnosed with coronary stent infection and aneurysmal dilatation of the coronary artery following Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). This condition is a highly complex “iatrogenic” complication, a rare adverse effect resulting from previous medical procedures conducted at various civil and private hospitals across India.
Complex Surgical Intervention
Faced with life-threatening infections and arterial swelling, the surgical team at AICTS performed a high-stakes procedure involving:
- Extraction and Exclusion: The infected coronary stents and the resulting aneurysms (bulges in the artery wall) were surgically removed or isolated.
- Bypass Grafting: Surgeons performed bypass grafting distal to the affected segments to ensure continued blood flow to the heart muscle.
All four patients have shown successful resolution of the complications, a testament to the advanced critical care capabilities of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).
A Landmark for Southern Command
The Southern Command of the Indian Army lauded the feat, noting that such success in treating a condition with so few global precedents reflects the exceptional expertise of military “doctors in uniform.”
