Three-Day Toll Waiver on Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Here’s Why and How to Avail It

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Toll Waiver

Mumbai-Pune Expressway commuters heading to Lonavala can now breathe a sigh of relief as a special three-day toll waiver has been officially implemented.

The exemption, aimed at facilitating a smooth journey for lakhs of devotees during the annual Ekvira Devi Yatra, began today, Tuesday, March 24, and will remain in effect until Thursday, March 26, 2026. However, authorities have clarified that this is not an automatic waiver for all vehicles; it is a targeted relief measure for those participating in the pilgrimage.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Toll Waiver: Dates and Duration

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the expressway toll administration have sanctioned the waiver for a 72-hour window. The dates coincide with the peak celebrations of the Ekvira Aai Yatra in Lonavala:

  • March 24 (Tuesday)
  • March 25 (Wednesday)
  • March 26 (Thursday)

This period typically sees a massive surge in traffic from the Agri-Koli community and devotees from Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, and the Mumbai Suburban districts.

Eligibility: Who Can Avail the Ekvira Devi Yatra Toll Free Benefit?

Unlike general holiday waivers, this exemption is specifically for devotees. To prevent misuse and ensure the benefit reaches the intended pilgrims, the administration has set a mandatory requirement:

The MP’s Waiver Letter: Devotees must present an official toll waiver letter issued by Suresh Mhatre (famously known as Balya Mama), the Member of Parliament for Bhiwandi (NCP – Sharad Pawar faction).

According to reports, MP Mhatre initiated the request to prevent financial strain on the thousands of families traveling in private vehicles and to avoid frequent heated arguments at toll plazas during the festival rush.

How to Avail the Exemption at Toll Plazas

If you are traveling for the yatra, follow these steps to ensure a hassle-free passage:

  1. Carry the Official Letter: Ensure you have a physical or verifiable copy of the letter from MP Suresh Mhatre’s office.
  2. Produce at Toll Booth: Present the letter to the toll operator at the Mumbai-Pune Expressway plazas.
  3. Verification: Once the letter is verified as part of the Ekvira Yatra convoy/movement, the vehicle will be allowed to pass without payment.

Impact on Regular Commuters

General commuters traveling between Mumbai and Pune for business or personal reasons (not related to the yatra) are required to pay the standard toll fees. Traffic authorities have warned of potential congestion near Lonavala and the Khandala ghat section due to the influx of devotees and have urged all motorists to follow lane discipline.

Heavy Traffic and Safety Advisory

With the IMD predicting hot and humid conditions in Thane and Raigad, with temperatures hovering around 38°C, devotees are advised to carry sufficient water and avoid travel during peak afternoon hours if possible.

MP Balya Mama Mhatre has also issued a public appeal: “While we have secured this toll relief to honor Ekvira Aai, I urge all devotees to prioritize safety, strictly adhere to traffic rules, and cooperate with the highway police to ensure a safe pilgrimage for everyone.”
