Pune Metro Changes Entry Rules: AFC Gates to Remain Closed by Default from March 3

Pune Metro Changes Entry Rules

PUNE – In a move to streamline passenger flow and enhance security, Pune Metro has announced a significant change to its Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system. Starting tomorrow, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the flap gates at all metro stations will remain closed by default.

Since the inception of the service, Pune Metro followed an “open-gate” policy where the AFC barriers remained retracted, closing only when an invalid ticket was detected or a commuter attempted to pass without scanning. Under the new protocol, the gates will function in a “normally closed” mode, similar to the systems used in Delhi and Dubai metros.

What Changes for Commuters?

Beginning Tuesday, passengers will find the entry and exit gates closed upon arrival at the station. The flaps will only retract to allow passage after a valid QR ticket, smart card, or compliant digital payment method is scanned at the sensor.

According to Maha Metro officials, this transition is aimed at providing a more intuitive experience for passengers and ensuring that every entry is properly accounted for within the system.

Key Highlights:

  • Effective Date: Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
  • New Protocol: Gates will stay closed and open only upon successful ticket validation.
  • Previous System: Gates were formerly open and only closed for invalid entries.
  • Stations Affected: All operational stations across the Pune Metro network.

Commuters are advised to keep their tickets or cards ready before approaching the gates to avoid congestion during peak hours. For any assistance, passengers can contact the Pune Metro helpline at 1800-270-5501.
