Apple CarPlay is Finally Letting You Binge-Watch While You Park
We’ve all been there—stuck in the driver’s seat while your EV charges, or waiting in a mall parking lot for what feels like an eternity. Usually, that means squinting at your iPhone screen to pass the time. But thanks to Apple’s latest software update, your car’s dashboard is about to get a major cinematic upgrade.
In the newly released iOS 26.4 public beta, Apple has finally introduced video streaming support for CarPlay. It’s a feature users have been begging for, and while it comes with some strictly enforced safety “catches,” it’s a game-changer for cabin entertainment.
Movies on the Dash (But Only When Stationary)
The biggest update is the integration of the Apple TV app directly into the CarPlay interface. Beta testers have shared glimpses of a familiar layout that allows you to browse your watchlist or resume a movie exactly where you left off.
For those who prefer other apps, the update also supports AirPlay casting. This means you can beam content from your iPhone straight to the car’s display, using on-screen touch controls to play, pause, or skip through episodes.
The catch? Safety is the priority. Video playback will only function when the vehicle is in “Park.” As soon as you shift into gear or start moving, the screen will likely cut to black or return to standard navigation to ensure you aren’t distracted while driving.
The Manufacturer “Green Light”
Even if you have the latest iPhone, you might have to wait for your car to catch up. Apple is requiring vehicle manufacturers to provide specific clearance for this feature. The car’s hardware needs to communicate effectively with the software to verify the vehicle’s status (parked vs. moving) before the video “gate” opens.
Smarter Conversations and AI Features
Beyond the “car cinema” experience, iOS 26.4 is leaning heavily into AI. A new category called “Voice-based conversational apps” is joining the lineup. This allows third-party AI assistants to handle navigation queries or audio requests hands-free, without interrupting Siri’s core functions.
What else is new in iOS 26.4?
- AI-Curated Playlists: Smarter Apple Music suggestions based on your listening habits.
- Enhanced Security: Tougher “Stolen Device” locks to protect your data.
- Hotspot Tracking: Better visibility into how much data your passengers are burning through.
When Can You Get It?
Since this is currently in public beta, Apple recommends keeping it off your primary “daily driver” phone for now, as there are still a few bugs to iron out. However, for those of us waiting at EV charging stations or navigating the gridlock of a busy city, this update promises to make the wait a whole lot more entertaining.
