Massive Fire Breaks Out at Medarth Labs

Rapid Spread and Immediate Danger

The blaze erupted during the afternoon hours, quickly escalating due to the presence of large quantities of oil, grease, and flammable materials stored within the company premises. Within minutes, the fire took a “terrible form,” spreading to an adjacent furniture mall.

The situation was particularly critical as the flames reached two filled gas cylinders. However, firefighters acted with extreme precision and bravery to secure the cylinders, preventing a massive blast that could have devastated the surrounding residential and commercial area.

Multi-Agency Response

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Wagholi fire station dispatched two fire tenders within minutes of the call. Recognizing the intensity of the chemical-fueled blaze, five additional tenders from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) were rushed to the site.

To combat the oil-based fire, officials utilized foam-based extinguishers alongside high-pressure water jets.

Casualties and Damage Assessment

  • Loss of Life: Thankfully, no fatalities or injuries were reported.
  • Evacuations: Employees and local residents were shifted to safety immediately after the fire broke out.
  • Economic Impact: While lives were saved, the company and the neighboring mall suffered significant financial losses.
  • Current Status: The fire is fully under control, and cooling operations are underway.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Local police and fire department officials have initiated a panchnama (investigation report) to determine the trigger of the blaze. The rapid coordination between PMRDA and PMC fire teams has been widely praised for preventing what could have been a catastrophic event for the Lohgaon-Wagholi locality.
