Pune Shivers as Temperatures Plummet to Single Digits; Maharashtra Hits Season’s Lowest at 5.4°C as IMD Issues 4-Day Cold Wave Alert
Pune | December 20, 2025: The chill in Pune and its surrounding districts has intensified as the city recorded a significant drop in minimum temperatures for the second consecutive day. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cold wave is sweeping across Maharashtra, with temperatures in several parts of Pune falling below the 8°C mark.
Pashan and Haveli Record Season’s Lowest
Data released for December 20 reveals that Haveli emerged as the coldest spot in the region with a minimum temperature of 6.9°C, followed closely by Pashan and Malin at 7.3°C. Central Pune also felt the sting of winter, with the Shivajinagar observatory recording 8.1°C, nearly 3 degrees below the normal range.
Other areas like Baramati (7.6°C), Talegaon (8.3°C), and Daund (8.5°C) also witnessed single-digit temperatures, making it one of the coldest spells of the 2025 winter season.

Why is it so Cold?
Weather experts attribute this sudden drop to the influence of cold northerly winds moving toward Maharashtra. While temperatures had briefly climbed to 11°C last week, the mercury has tumbled by 2–3°C in the last 48 hours. The IMD has predicted that dry weather and cold conditions will persist for the next two to four days across the state.
Regional Outlook: Niphad at 5.4°C
The cold wave isn’t limited to Pune. Niphad in Nashik recorded the state’s lowest temperature at a biting 5.4°C. Similar drops have been reported across Vidarbha and Marathwada, with the IMD warning that the chill may intensify further until December 25, after which a slight change in wind patterns might bring marginal relief.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions against the biting morning chill, as the IMD expects the “Hudhudi” (shivering) cold to remain dominant over the next 48 hours.
