Pune Metro Expansion: Union Cabinet Clears Two New Lines for Pune Metro

Pune’s public transport network is set to grow in a big way after the Union Cabinet approved two new routes under the Pune Metro Expansion plan. The decision covers Line 4 and Line 4A, both part of Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, and marks a major step toward building a faster and greener transit system across the city.

What the New Lines Include

Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla)
• Length: 25.65 km
• Stations: 22
• Key areas covered: Kharadi IT Park, Hadapsar, Swargate, Sinhagad Road and Khadakwasla

Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug)
• Length: 6.11 km
• Stations: 6
• This is a spur line connected to Line 4

Together, Line 4 and Line 4A stretch across 31.63 km with a total of 28 stations. These elevated corridors will link IT hubs, commercial pockets, residential areas, and educational clusters across East, South and West Pune.

Part of Pune’s Long-Term Mobility Plan

The approval is the second big move under Phase 2, after Line 2A and Line 2B were cleared earlier. The Pune Metro Expansion will integrate smoothly with existing and upcoming lines at Kharadi Bypass, Nal Stop and Swargate. It will also offer interchange options at Hadapsar Railway Station and future links toward Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road.

These lines are an important part of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan and are expected to improve connectivity between metro, rail and bus networks.

Smoother Travel on Pune’s Busiest Roads

The two corridors will pass through key routes such as:
• Solapur Road
• Magarpatta Road
• Karve Road
• Sinhagad Road
• Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway

This is expected to ease congestion, improve road safety and give commuters a dependable alternative to daily traffic.

Ridership Expected to Rise Sharply

According to official projections:
• Combined ridership for Line 4 and 4A is expected to touch 4.09 lakh per day in 2028
• It is projected to grow to around 7 lakh in 2038
• It may cross 11.7 lakh by 2058

The Kharadi–Khadakwasla line alone is expected to carry more than 9 lakh passengers daily by 2058, while the Warje spur line is projected to touch over 2.4 lakh daily riders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on his ‘X’ timeline, “A major boost to Pune’s public transport network. Cabinet approves Phase-2 of Pune Metro (Lines 4 & 4A) connecting various areas of the city. This decision ensures faster and more comfortable commute for the people of Pune, which is an important centre for growth and innovation.”

Project Execution and Timeline

The project will be carried out by Maha-Metro, which will handle all civil, electrical and mechanical work. Pre-construction tasks including surveys and detailed designs are already in progress. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 9,857.85 crore, jointly funded by the central government, Maharashtra government and international funding agencies. The completion period is expected to be five years.

A Big Step in Pune Metro Expansion

With the addition of Line 4 and Line 4A, Pune Metro’s network will cross the 100 km mark. The Pune Metro Expansion is aimed at giving citizens quicker travel, less traffic, and a cleaner mode of transport. These new lines are expected to play a crucial role in shaping Pune’s growth and improving the overall quality of urban life.
