Maharashtra Cab, Taxi and Rickshaw Drivers Strike on October 9: Here’s Why

App-based cab, taxi, and rickshaw drivers across Maharashtra will go on a one-day strike on October 9, demanding better wages and improved working conditions. The protest, organized by the Maharashtra Gig Workers Platform, will include drivers from popular platforms such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The strike is expected to disrupt transport services across major cities in the state.
Why Are App-Based Drivers Protesting?
The drivers have raised long-standing issues including low earnings despite rising fuel and maintenance costs, lack of social security, and arbitrary account suspensions by app companies. They are also demanding transparent fare structures and insurance benefits.
“The current working conditions are exploitative. Drivers are earning less even as expenses rise. There is no social security and no proper system for addressing grievances. This strike is a call for dignity and fairness,” said Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, president of the Maharashtra Gig Workers Platform.
Months of Agitation Leading Up to the Strike
The October 9 strike follows continuous protests since July 15, including hunger strikes and sit-ins at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan. Protesters allege corruption within the Maharashtra Transport Department and accuse companies like Ola, Uber, and Rapido of operating illegally in violation of state regulations.
Despite multiple FIRs filed against unauthorized bike taxi services, drivers claim these platforms continue operations unchecked.
Government’s Response and Rising Tensions
On September 30, tensions escalated when the state Transport Minister refused to meet the protestors. Several drivers staged a ‘jail bharo’ movement, voluntarily courting arrest to highlight their demands. Following this, Vidyadhar Mahale, Secretary to the Chief Minister, met with protestors along with senior transport officials. Additional Transport Commissioner Bharat Kalskar was asked to find a solution, but no breakthrough has been reported yet.
Protesters also allege that the Transport Minister’s reluctance to act is influenced by sponsorship ties with Rapido, further fueling mistrust.
Strike Timed with National Finance Conference
The strike date coincides with a national finance conference in Mumbai that will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Organizers believe the timing will draw national attention to the plight of gig and app-based drivers.
With hundreds of drivers expected to participate, the Maharashtra app-based drivers strike on October 9 is likely to add significant pressure on public transport systems, creating inconvenience for daily commuters across the state.
