Pune Metro Tightens Security After Unruly Passenger Incidents

The Pune Metro has increased security measures following repeated incidents of unruly passenger behaviour. Security supervisors and staff are now patrolling trains and station premises on both operational routes; Ramwadi to Vanaz and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate. The step comes after a 65-year-old man from Muzaffarnagar, Bihar, was arrested for making obscene gestures and trying to take photographs of a woman passenger inside a metro coach.
Aim to Ensure Passenger Safety
Metro officials said patrol teams will conduct five to six rounds daily across all stations. The focus is on ensuring passenger safety and maintaining discipline. Security personnel, all in uniform, will keep a close watch to prevent misconduct. Offenders may face penalties under metro rules, and in serious cases, they will be handed over to police.
Misconduct and Banned Items Strictly Monitored
The patrols are tasked with preventing acts like littering, eating inside trains, and inappropriate behaviour. Metro officials have also intensified checks for prohibited items including tobacco, firecrackers, alcohol, explosives, petrol, diesel, and weapons. Bags are screened at entry points using X-ray machines.
In recent checks, officials confiscated 3.7 kg of tobacco products on the Purple Line (PCMC to Swargate) and 8.7 kg on the Blue Line (Vanaz to Ramwadi).
Metro Authorities Urge Public Cooperation
Chandrashekhar Tambavekar, Director (Admin, Public Relations), said the initiative will reinforce safety and civic responsibility among commuters. He also urged passengers to follow rules and promptly report any misbehaviour to ensure a safe environment for all.
