FSSAI Guidelines to Fight Obesity and Stay Fit

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), along with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, recommends easy and practical steps to fight obesity through diet.
What is Obesity?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese.
Obesity is a growing health concern in India, but simple changes in what you eat can help you stay healthy.
Here’s what FSSAI suggests to prevent and fight obesity:
- Choose local and seasonal food: Include fruits and vegetables that are in season in your daily meals. These are fresher, tastier, and more nutritious.
- Opt for whole grains and unpolished dals: Replace refined grains with healthier alternatives like whole grains and unpolished dals. These provide more fibre and essential nutrients.
- Include millets in your diet: Bajra, ragi, and jowar are great choices. These coarse grains are full of nutrients and are good for overall health.
- Prefer light and traditional dishes: Foods like idli, upma, dhokla, and chilla are healthy, light, and easy to digest. They can be included regularly in your diet.
- Avoid fried and packaged foods: These often contain extra fats, salt, and preservatives that can add unhealthy calories and affect your health.
By following these guidelines, you can make small but meaningful changes to your diet. Eating fresh and wholesome food not only helps control obesity but also improves overall well-being.
A balanced plate with local, seasonal ingredients is a simple and effective way to live a healthier life.
