In a major boost to its crime-fighting capabilities, the state of Maharashtra has significantly expanded its fleet of high-tech mobile forensic labs. The state, which was the first in India to launch such an initiative, has now increased the number of these “Mobile Forensic Vans” from 21 to a total of 59.

The move is a direct response to the evolving nature of crime. As criminals adopt new technologies and methods, police need equally advanced tools to collect evidence quickly and effectively. These state-of-the-art vans are designed to do just that, bringing the lab directly to the crime scene.

Previously, investigations relied heavily on eyewitness accounts and human observation, which could be unreliable. While DNA analysis was used, it was often limited in scope, causing delays. Now, these mobile labs allow officials to quickly collect a wide range of evidence, including biological, chemical, physical, and digital data, right on the spot. This speeds up the entire investigative process and helps in tracking down criminals with solid, scientific proof.

The impact is already being felt. Since their deployment, these mobile labs have collected a remarkable 3,432 pieces of evidence across the state, directly aiding in solving cases. Key areas like Mumbai, Nagpur, and Nashik have seen particularly high numbers of evidence collections, demonstrating the vans’ crucial role in urban and rural districts alike.

The strategic placement of these 59 vans ensures wide coverage. Major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Thane have multiple units, while the service has also been extended to smaller towns and rural subdivisions, including Jalgaon, Nandurbar, Latur, and Amravati.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories under the guidance of senior officials, is bringing a new level of transparency and speed to the justice system. By leveraging cutting-edge technology at the crime scene itself, Maharashtra police are ensuring that evidence doesn’t go cold.
