Pune restaurant charges ₹20 fine for wasting food, sparks online debate
A South Indian restaurant in Pune has sparked an online debate after introducing a ₹20 fine for wasting food.
The rule came to light when a photo of the restaurant’s menu went viral on social media. Beneath the list of dishes and prices, a note at the bottom read, “You will be charged ₹20 for wasting food.”
The idea is aimed at discouraging excess orders and promoting mindful eating. Many people have welcomed the move, calling it a small but meaningful step to reduce food wastage. One user wrote, “Good step. There should be penalty on food wastage.” Another pointed out that such measures, if extended to weddings and large events, could help curb India’s massive food waste problem.

Every restaurant should do the same, weddings and functions should start charging fines too! pic.twitter.com/Bw3eU7b58L
Supporters also praised the restaurant’s reputation for authentic South Indian food, suggesting the fine reflects its confidence in serving quality meals.
But not everyone agreed. Some argued the rule could be unfair to customers. A user commented, “What if the food is not edible or doesn’t suit my taste? Can I charge them twenty rupees for failing to satisfy my requirement?” Others felt diners should not be penalised if the food quality does not match expectations.
The discussion highlights how strongly people connect with food, whether it’s about reducing waste or ensuring good taste. While some see the fine as a practical step, others feel it puts unnecessary pressure on customers.
