Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad will get major relief from traffic congestion with the approval of a new elevated corridor along the busy Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway (NH48). The 8.6 km stretch, from Kiwale to Balewadi Stadium, will be built with wide service roads on both sides, promising smoother travel for thousands of daily commuters.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is already ready, and land acquisition at key points has been completed. Once built, the corridor is expected to save travel time, improve traffic flow, and ease pressure on the route that connects Hinjawadi IT Park with the rest of Pune.
Key features of the project include:
- A 4-lane elevated corridor with 6 ground-level lanes.
- 24-meter-wide service roads on both sides.
- A double-decker flyover at Bhumkar Chowk, Wakad.
- Three additional lanes each on the Mula, Mutha, and Pavana river bridges.
- Spacious underpasses at Mukai Chowk (Kiwale), Ravet, Punawale, Tathawade, and Bhumkar Chowk.
- Proposed Metro connectivity (Nigdi–Wakad–Chakan line) along the service road from Mukai Chowk to Bhujbal Chowk, Wakad.

While this corridor has moved forward, several other elevated road projects in Pune are still waiting for progress. Corridors such as Pune–Shirur, Nashik Phata–Khed, Hadapsar–Yavat, and Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur have seen repeated delays in their bid opening dates. The latest deadline for these projects has now been pushed to 15 September.
If completed on time, the new Kiwale–Balewadi elevated corridor could significantly cut congestion in Pimpri–Chinchwad and make travel on NH48 far smoother for residents and IT professionals alike.
