Pune Metro Set for Major Boost: 12 New Train Sets Ordered for Extended Routes

Pune, 8th July 2025 – In a major development that promises to improve urban transit for Pune residents, the Pune Metro is set to expand its fleet with 12 brand new metro train sets, reinforcing its preparedness for the forthcoming extensions from PCMC to Nigdi and Swargate to Katraj. This move comes as part of the strategic expansion of Pune Metro’s reach and efficiency, under the larger umbrella of urban mobility transformation in the city.
Construction work is already well underway on the PCMC–Nigdi stretch, and authorities confirm that the tender process for the Swargate–Katraj corridor is also nearing completion. Anticipating the operational demands of these two new corridors, Pune Metro has placed an official purchase order for the 12 new three-coach train sets.
The order has been awarded to Titagarh Rail Systems Limited and Titagarh Firema, both of whom will manufacture the new rakes entirely under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The new trains will be constructed using aluminium, just like the existing fleet, ensuring continuity in design, durability, and performance. The total investment for the procurement stands at ₹430.53 crore, with the delivery expected in phases over the next 30 months.
These new trains will be identical to the existing fleet in terms of design and functionality. They will come equipped with:
- Fully air-conditioned coaches
- Automatic doors for enhanced passenger safety
- Automated announcement systems and digital display panels to aid communication and accessibility
Once inducted, the Pune Metro fleet will expand from the current 34 trains to a total of 46 trains, ready to cater to the growing commuter base across the city.
Speaking about the development, Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maha Metro, said:
“Maha Metro has placed an order for 12 new trains for the extended PCMC–Nigdi corridor of Pune Metro. This will ensure that as soon as the construction of the extended routes is completed, train services can begin without delay. This will significantly benefit commuters on the PCMC–Nigdi stretch.”
With this expansion, Pune Metro is not only advancing toward a broader network but also reinforcing its commitment to delivering efficient, modern, and commuter-friendly urban transit solutions.
