Mumbai, 7th July 2025: The Maharashtra Education Department has clarified that all schools will operate normally on July 8 and 9, despite a planned statewide protest by teachers and non-teaching staff. The announcement aims to dispel confusion among parents and students regarding potential school closures.

No Official Closure Order Issued

Mahesh Palekar, Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, issued a formal statement confirming, “There is no official instruction for school closures. Educational institutions are to operate normally on July 8 and 9.” The clarification comes after the Teachers’ Coordination Committee announced a two-day protest to demand long-pending financial grants and benefits for aided schools.

Why Are Teachers Protesting?

The protest stems from unresolved grievances dating back to August 2024, when teachers and staff staged a 75-day strike demanding the release of funds for non-salary expenses, infrastructure, and other benefits. Although the government issued a Government Resolution (GR) on October 14, 2024, the promised financial aid was never disbursed.

“The government gave us verbal assurances, but we are still waiting for actual implementation,” said a senior committee member. “After a year of inaction, we have no choice but to demonstrate again.”

Peaceful Protest, No School Disruptions

The Teachers’ Coordination Committee has assured that the protest at Azad Maidan, Mumbai, will be conducted peacefully without disrupting classes. Teachers participating in the demonstration will either fulfil their duties beforehand or take approved leave.

What Should Parents Do?

The Education Department has urged parents to send their children to school as usual, emphasizing that no official closure has been mandated. Any changes to school schedules will be communicated directly by school administrations.

As the monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly continues, the protest aims to pressure the government into addressing teachers’ demands while ensuring minimal impact on students’ education.
