Pune: Urban Development Minister Announces Comprehensive Traffic Master Plan to Tackle City’s Growing Congestion Crisis

Pune News, July 04, 2024: In a decisive move to address Pune’s worsening traffic congestion, the Maharashtra government has rolled out a comprehensive traffic master plan for the city, prepared in 2024, with multiple initiatives already underway. The announcement was made by Urban Development Minister of State Madhuri Misal during the ongoing monsoon session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
The issue was brought to light through a calling attention motion by MLAs Sunil Kamble, Bhimrao Tapkir, Rahul Kul, Bapusaheb Pathare, and Vijay Shivtare, highlighting the urgent need for traffic reforms.
Rising Vehicles, Rising Challenges
According to the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Pune currently has a staggering 40,42,659 registered vehicles, contributing to severe road congestion. To combat this, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Traffic Police are collaborating on multiple fronts.
Key Measures Underway
- Smart Traffic Solutions: Upgrading signals, deploying AI-powered CCTV cameras, and implementing smart city technologies.
- Strict Enforcement: Designating no-parking and no-halting zones, especially in Pune Cantonment areas.
- Infrastructure Expansion: Proposals for ring roads, bypasses, flyovers, and metro rail networks to accommodate projected growth till 2054.
- Road Safety Enhancements: Construction of traffic islands, road dividers, zebra crossings, and lane markings for smoother flow.
- Public Transport Optimization: Relocating obstructive bus stops and seeking public feedback for better coordination.
Ongoing Monitoring & Public Consultation
Regular review meetings between traffic authorities and PMC officials are being held at central and zonal levels to ensure effective execution. Minister Misal also assured that local representatives and citizens will be consulted before finalizing key decisions.
