Pune News, July 03, 2025: In a sweeping cleanliness initiative under Swachh Survekshan 2025, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) launched an intensive deep-cleaning drive across the city, uncovering shocking neglect in public spaces. The operation, spanning from Dengale Bridge to Balgandharva Chowk, saw unprecedented enforcement against littering, encroachments, and urban defacement.

Key Highlights of the Clean-Up Drive

  • Waste Removal: A staggering 27 metric tons of waste—including 9 tons of wet waste, 18 tons of dry waste, and 59 tons of roadblock debris—was cleared.
  • Illegal Encroachments: Authorities removed 129 footpath encroachments33 abandoned vehicles, and 400 illegal banners and boards.
  • Infrastructure Clean-Up: The Electrical Department dismantled 36 km of unauthorized overhead cables, while the Garden Department pruned 189 dangerous tree branches and cleared 12 tons of tree stumps.
  • Debris Disposal2 metric tons of construction debris and 4 tons of mixed waste were properly disposed of.
  • Road Repairs15 potholes were repaired to improve road safety.

PMC Admits Lapses in Routine Maintenance

Despite having dedicated teams for waste management, encroachment removal, and urban upkeep, PMC officials acknowledged severe gaps in daily maintenance. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram emphasized the need for stricter enforcement and public cooperation to sustain cleanliness efforts.

Doctors’ Day Celebrated Alongside Cleanliness Drive

In a parallel event, Doctors’ Day was observed at Kamala Nehru Hospital and PMC’s Health Department. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kalpana Balivanta highlighted the importance of doctor-patient trust and communication, aligning public health with civic hygiene.

Month-Long Campaign: “Adopt Cleanliness, Drive Away Illness”

PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department is running a month-long campaign (1st–31st July 2025) to promote hygiene. Citizens are urged to participate actively in keeping Pune clean.

Public Participation Encouraged

With 1,666 municipal employees already engaged, PMC now invites volunteers and NGOs to join the drive in upcoming days.
