MSEDCL Announces 80 Paise per Unit Discount for Smart Meter Users Under New ToD Tariff
Mumbai, June 28, 2025 – In a significant move to promote energy efficiency, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has announced an 80 paise per unit discount for residential consumers with smart meters under the newly approved Time of Day (ToD) tariff scheme, effective from July 1, 2025.
Smart Meter Users to Benefit from ToD Discount
The ToD tariff offers an 80 paise per unit reduction during peak solar hours (9 AM to 5 PM), when solar energy generation is at its highest. Since solar power is cheaper compared to conventional sources, MSEDCL is passing on the cost benefits to consumers with smart meters.
“This initiative encourages consumers to shift their high-power usage to daylight hours, optimizing renewable energy consumption,” said Lokesh Chandra, Chairman & Managing Director of MSEDCL.
Revised Tariff Structure for Next Five Years
The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) approved the revised tariffs on June 26, 2025, after MSEDCL filed a review petition on April 2, 2025, citing financial constraints due to the initial tariff cuts. The new rates will be phased down gradually over five years (till March 2030).
Only 12% of Consumers Have Smart Meters
Currently, MSEDCL has installed 35 lakh smart meters, covering:
- 80% of government offices
- All electricity feeders
- 12% of total residential consumers (out of 3.4 crore customers)
The smart meters enable real-time monitoring, reducing power theft and improving billing accuracy.
Solar Energy Expansion to Reduce Costs
MSEDCL has planned:
- 16,600 MWÂ of dedicated solar power for the agriculture sector
- 16,450 MW of solar energy at ₹2.70/unit
- 4,300 MW of hybrid (solar + wind) power at ₹3.60/unit
Since solar power is half the cost of conventional electricity, the savings are being transferred to smart meter users.
Key Takeaways:
✅ 80 paise/unit discount for smart meter users (9 AM – 5 PM)
✅ New ToD tariff effective from July 1, 2025
✅ Only 12% of MSEDCL consumers currently have smart meters
✅ Solar power expansion to reduce overall electricity costs
