Pune, Mumbai, and several other districts in Maharashtra are set to experience heavy rainfall over the next three days, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts. The IMD has sounded a yellow alert for Pune and Mumbai, while Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are under a red alert, indicating extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

IMD Weather Alerts: What Do They Mean?

Red Alert (Extreme Weather Conditions)

  • Districts Affected: Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg
  • Expected Conditions:
    • Extremely heavy rainfall
    • Thunderstorms with lightning
    • Gusty winds at isolated places

Orange Alert (Severe Weather Conditions)

  • Districts Affected: Thane, Mumbai, Kolhapur (including ghat areas), Satara (including ghats), Sangli, Akola, Amaravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur
  • Expected Conditions:
    • Heavy to very heavy rainfall
    • Thunderstorms with lightning
    • Gusty winds (50-60 kmph) at isolated places

Yellow Alert (Moderate to Heavy Rainfall)

  • Districts Affected: Pune, Mumbai and all districts of Maharashtra not included in red or orange alerts
  • Expected Conditions:
    • Heavy rainfall
    • Thunderstorms with lightning
    • Gusty winds (50-60 kmph) at isolated places

The IMD has urged residents in the affected regions to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel, especially in hilly and coastal areas.

  • Be cautious of waterlogging, landslides, and power disruptions.
