Pune: PMC Advocates Breeding Guppy Fish in Flower Pots, Fountains and Lotus Ponds at Home to Combat Dengue and Malaria
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a proactive campaign to curb the rising threat of dengue by promoting the use of guppy fish as a natural and cost-effective solution to control mosquito breeding. Alongside this initiative, the civic body has urged residents to maintain cleanliness in and around their homes to prevent stagnant water accumulation—a key factor in dengue outbreaks.
Guppy Fish: A Natural Mosquito Predator
Guppies, small freshwater fish, have proven highly effective in eating mosquito larvae before they mature into disease-carrying insects. The PMC highlights that this method is safe, chemical-free, and sustainable, offering a long-term solution compared to emergency chemical sprays.
“This is a low-cost, year-round, safe way of reducing the spread of dengue in which the whole community can participate,” stated officials. “It offers a viable alternative to using chemicals and can reduce costly emergency epidemic containment measures.”
Public Participation Crucial for Success
The PMC has encouraged residents to breed guppy fish in water bodies such as:
- Lotus ponds (कमळकुंड)
- Waterfalls (धबधबे)
- Fountains (कारंजे)
Basically we are looking at breeding guppy fish at home in any container that is expected to hold stagnant water.
Additionally, citizens are advised to:
✔ Avoid water stagnation in pots, tanks, tires, and flower vases.
✔ Regularly clean household and surrounding areas.
✔ Adopt guppy fish in water storage units to prevent mosquito breeding.
