Ratnagiri | Maharashtra, June 08, 2025: A catastrophic collision between an LPG tanker and a mini-bus on the Mumbai-Goa Highway near Bavanadi, Ratnagiri, led to a massive gas leak, subsequent fires, and a five-hour traffic blockade on Sunday morning, June 8. The accident, which occurred around 7:45 AM, left 30 passengers injured and caused extensive damage to nearby properties.
Accident Details
The LPG tanker, en route to Mumbai, collided with a private mini-bus traveling from Chiplun to Ratnagiri. The impact caused the tanker to overturn, resulting in a severe LPG leak. The highly flammable gas ignited, triggering a fire that engulfed a nearby house, a rickshaw, two motorcycles, and a cowshed. A buffalo sustained severe burns, while residents narrowly escaped unharmed.

The mini-bus plunged 20 feet off the road, injuring all 30 passengers onboard, including teachers headed for a training program in Ratnagiri. They were rushed to Ratnagiri District Hospital for treatment.

Emergency Response & Traffic Disruptions
Firefighters, police, and local authorities swiftly arrived at the scene to contain the blaze and prevent further explosions. By 8:45 AM, efforts to safely extract the remaining LPG were underway, forcing a complete halt of traffic on both sides of the highway. Vehicles were diverted through Sangameshwar and Pali, causing long queues of stranded trucks and cars.
Ratnagiri Superintendent of Police Nitin Bagate supervised rescue operations, ensuring swift medical aid and traffic management. Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision while working to restore normalcy.
