In a groundbreaking discovery, archaeologists from the Raigad Development Authority and the Indian Archaeological Department have unearthed a rare astrolabe from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj period during ongoing excavations at Raigad Fort. The find provides crucial evidence of the advanced astronomical and scientific methods employed in the fort’s construction.

Significance of the Astrolabe

The astrolabe, an ancient astronomical instrument, was historically used to study celestial bodies, determine directions, and measure time. Known as Yantraraj (King of Instruments) in Sanskrit, it played a vital role in calculating latitude, longitude, and other astronomical parameters. Experts suggest that this device may have been used during the fort’s construction to align structures with celestial patterns.

Location of the Discovery

The excavation, ongoing for the past few years, focused on key areas of the fort, including near the Ropeway Upper StationKushavarta Lake, and the Jagdishwar Temple. The astrolabe was found near the Vadeshwar Temple, where remnants of Shivaji-era structures were being studied.

Key Features of the Astrolabe

The instrument bears inscriptions and engravings of two turtle/snake-like creatures, with markings indicating directions—likely aiding in navigation. The engravings suggest it was used to determine north and south alignments.

A Major Boost for Historical Research

Former MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, Chairman of the Raigad Development Authority, highlighted the discovery’s importance, stating that it opens new avenues for research into Shivaji Maharaj’s scientific and architectural prowess.

What’s Next?

The astrolabe will undergo further analysis to decode its inscriptions and confirm its exact usage during the Maratha Empire. This discovery reinforces Raigad Fort’s reputation as a marvel of ancient Indian engineering and astronomy.
