In a dramatic turn of weather events, the Southwest Monsoon has made a historic and unseasonal entry into Mumbai and Pune today, 26th May 2025, as confirmed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This marks the earliest monsoon arrival in the past 25 years, surpassing even the 2006 season when the monsoon reached the region on 31st May.

The normal date for monsoon onset over Mumbai is 11th June, making this year’s advancement 16 days earlier than average. According to the IMD, this is the earliest monsoon advancement over Mumbai during the period 2001–2025.

With this accelerated arrival, the IMD has also issued a Red Alert for several districts in Maharashtra. The affected areas include Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Ghats of Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara, with forecasts warning of extremely heavy rainfall for today and tomorrow.

Local authorities have been put on high alert and citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay updated through official channels, and prepare for potential urban flooding, especially in low-lying areas.

The early monsoon has already brought intense showers to various parts of coastal and central Maharashtra, with social media flooded with visuals of rain-drenched streets, overflowing drains, and vibrant monsoon skies.

Stay tuned for real-time weather updates and advisories from the IMD and local disaster management teams.
