The Pune Forest Department, in collaboration with the Joint Forest Management Committee, has announced a strict plastic ban at Sinhagad Fort, effective June 1, 2025. The decision follows a review meeting chaired by District Collector Jitendra Dudi on May 16.

Under the new regulations, tourists will be required to pay a deposit for plastic bottles, refundable only upon returning the bottles. Those found littering plastic waste will face punitive action. The ban covers plastic bottles, carry bags, and other single-use plastic items.

Assistant Conservator of Forests Deepak Pawar stated that while the district collector urged immediate implementation, the department sought time for proper preparations. A vendor committee has been formed to monitor compliance and ensure effective waste management.

Additionally, the department plans to install a water tank near food stalls to provide drinking water as an eco-friendly alternative. A mobile app for tourism management, offering real-time updates on parking, traffic, and emergencies, is also in development and may launch by June 1.

This initiative follows a previous unsuccessful attempt due to lack of vendor cooperation. However, with stricter enforcement and vendor involvement, authorities are optimistic about its success.
