Pune is set to witness a transformative leap in urban connectivity with the upcoming inauguration of a state-of-the-art cable-stayed pedestrian bridge near JM Road, connecting Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden Metro Station and Shaniwar Peth. Slated for completion by the end of May 2025, this 170-metre-long bridge, inspired by the silhouette of the Indian classical instrument Tanpura, promises seamless connectivity for metro commuters while enhancing pedestrian safety.

Architectural Marvel with Smart Features

  • Designed with an asymmetrical pylon, the bridge is both an engineering feat and a cultural statement.
  • Equipped with escalators, stairways, and programmable LED lighting for dynamic night-time illumination.
  • Offers direct access to key commercial hubs like Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road, and nearby markets, eliminating the need for risky road crossings.

Pagdi Bridge: Another Pedestrian Link by Mid-June

Pune Metro is also constructing the Pagdi Bridge, a 105-metre pedestrian pathway linking Deccan Metro Station to Narayan Peth, expected to be ready by mid-June 2025. Inspired by the traditional Maratha turban, it features:

  • An 18-metre-tall bowstring arch
  • An 8-metre-wide walkway with a viewing deck
  • Adjustable LED lighting for aesthetic appeal

Boosting Sustainable Urban Mobility

These bridges are part of Pune Metro’s multimodal connectivity plan, aiming to:
✔ Reduce traffic congestion
✔ Lower carbon emissions
✔ Improve last-mile connectivity between heritage areas and metro stations

Metro Line 3 Update: Trial Runs by September 2025

Meanwhile, the 24-km Metro Line 3 (Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi) is progressing, with trial runs expected by September 2025 and full operations by 2026. Once complete, it will serve 23 stations, catering to Pune’s growing IT and residential zones.

A Step Towards a Smarter, Greener Pune

These projects underscore Pune’s commitment to sustainable, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure that blends cultural heritage with modern engineering. By prioritizing accessibility, safety, and eco-conscious design, the city is redefining urban mobility for future generations.
