Pune: Karnataka Mangoes Fill Market Gap As Alphonso Season Nears End In Konkan

Pune/Market Yard, 5th May 2025: As the renowned Alphonso (Hapus) mango season in Maharashtra’s Konkan region draws to a close, Karnataka mangoes have stepped in to fill the supply gap in Pune’s markets. These mangoes, known for their similarity in taste to Alphonso, are witnessing growing popularity, especially this year due to a decline in Alphonso production caused by adverse climatic conditions.
Mango traders at the Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard noted a significant drop in arrivals from the Konkan districts of Devgad, Ratnagiri, and Raigad. With the Alphonso season ending earlier than usual, traders anticipate a steady rise in consumer demand for Karnataka mangoes. “With Alphonso becoming scarce, consumer demand for Karnataka mangoes is expected to increase. Their season will likely extend until around 15th June,” said one trader.
The Tumkur region in Karnataka, a major mango cultivation hub, began its harvest about 15 days later than usual this year. Nonetheless, initial market supplies have been robust.
On Sunday, 4th May, the market yard received between 5,000 and 7,000 wooden crates of Karnataka mangoes, each crate containing between three and five dozen fruits. Additionally, two-dozen boxes of Karnataka Alphonso were available for sale. In total, about 20,000 mango boxes arrived at the yard, which also included 5,000 crates of other mango varieties like Lalbagh, Pairi, and Badami.
Current Market Rates for Karnataka Mangoes:
- Karnataka Alphonso (3 to 5 dozen per crate): ₹1,000 to ₹1,600
- Karnataka Alphonso (2 dozen crate): ₹300 to ₹500
- Pairi (4 dozen crate): ₹1,000 to ₹1,500
- Lalbagh: ₹40 to ₹60 per kg
- Badami: ₹40 to ₹50 per kg
As Karnataka mangoes take center stage in Pune’s markets, they are expected to satisfy the city’s summer mango cravings well into mid-June.
