Pune witnessed a serious traffic mishap on Tuesday evening when a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into multiple vehicles at the congested Chandni Chowk junction. The accident occurred around 6.20 p.m. as the bus, bearing registration number MH12 KQ0683, was en route from Chandni Chowk to the Kothrud Depot.

According to the police, the bus was moving along a slight incline when the driver lost control, allegedly due to failed brakes. The vehicle then ploughed into two autorickshaws, one four-wheeler, and three motorcycles, dragging some of them for several metres and causing a traffic blockade. The accident took place near Bhusari Colony, a densely traveled area.

Three people sustained injuries, one of whom suffered a fracture. Fortunately, all injured individuals are reported to be in stable condition after being rushed to a nearby hospital. A motorcyclist was among the more seriously hurt, as reported by eyewitness present at the scene.

Kothrud Police took the PMPML bus driver into custody for questioning and have begun examining the vehicle’s maintenance records. Senior Inspector Sandeep Deshmane stated, “The bus driver said that as the brake was not working, to avoid a major mishap, he took the vehicle to the roadside.”

Eyewitness accounts confirm that the driver made attempts to control the bus but could not avoid the collision. In total, five vehicles—two autorickshaws, two motorcycles, and one car—were damaged. Minor injuries were also reported among a few bystanders.

Emergency response teams, including police personnel, arrived promptly to manage the situation and ensure the injured received medical attention. Traffic flow at Chandni Chowk was restored after authorities cleared the damaged vehicles from the road.

PMPML has initiated an internal inquiry to determine the cause of the brake failure, while Kothrud Police continue their investigation into the incident.
